Earlier this year I blogged about the illegal dumping of asbestos in Grimsby and yet again, it has been reported that another illegal dumping has occurred but this time in Cambridge.
A Cambridge builder, Loni Zeka has been ordered to pay a mere £420 after dumping dangerous and hazardous asbestos cement sheets in Fen Road, Chesterton.
He was undertaking refurbishment work for a resident in Chesterton and paid two unregistered traders to remove the hazardous asbestos waste from a site which was later found dumped in a public area on Fen Road.
He pleaded guilty of failing in his duty of care for waste disposal when he appeared at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court.
Counsellor Mick Martin, the authority’s cabinet member for environmental services said, “I am pleased to see that on this occasion the individual sought to right his wrong by collecting the dumped asbestos waste and disposing of it correctly. We would remind local residents and businesses to only use registered traders to take away bulky and hazardous waste; and please check their credentials. Fly tipping is a blight on our countryside and we will continue to take action against offenders.”
Exposure to asbestos can increase the chances of developing asbestos related diseases which include asbestosis, pleural thickening, pleural plaques, lung cancer and fatal Mesothelioma.
The Health & Safety Executive earlier this year released data that indicates that about 2,200 people a year in England & Wales die from Mesothelioma. People can also develop other asbestos related conditions such as asbestosis, pleural thickening and pleural plaques as a result of exposure to asbestos.
