I attended the London Action Mesothelioma Day on Friday 4th July 2014 chaired by Paul Street at the London Hazards Centre together with Mark Luxton. We had the opportunity of joining well wishers and supporters at the London Action Mesothelioma Day.
An insight into historical Union campaigns for reform and introduction of health & safety to protect workers against asbestos exposure was provided by Dan Shears the GMB National Health & Safety Organiser for Asbestos Regulations.
This was followed by the telling of heartfelt stories from families and sufferers of Mesothelioma including a husband and wife both exposed to asbestos where the wife has been diagnosed with Mesothelioma. Both were employed as Managers and were based in the M&S flagship store in London.
Very recently widowed Vince Hagedorn a campaigner against Asbestos in Schools, also told the story of his wife, a teacher, who underwent ground breaking radical treatment in U.S. which had prolonged her life by over 5 years.
Rachel Thomas from the Guys & St Thomas Lung Cancer Team gave an update into the psychological support offered by the team to families and provided an outline of Research and Surgical Treatment currently offered at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital.
Action Mesothelioma Day is an annual event, which takes place at multiple locations around the country to draw awareness to asbestos related diseases.
