Lampard Report into Savile’s Abuse at 2 Hospitals Published This Week
The Lampard Report into Jimmy Savile’s sickening reign of abuse at Leeds General Infirmary and Broadmoor Hospitals is due out on Thursday.
It's an important moment in the rightly exhaustive investigation into the abuse scandal which broke in 2012, a year after the former DJ and television presenter died.
Jimmy Savile was never brought to justice which makes this report and those which will follow into other NHS establishments and the BBC all the more vital.
At Slater and Gordon Lawyers we look forward to seeing the report and hope it addresses how Savile could have operated for so long without being detected.
It is clear that people ignored Savile’s abuse. Often they may have been afraid because he was deemed to be so powerful within many different institutes. Some might have decided that abuse claims against Savile would damage their organisation’s reputation. And others, no doubt, worried that Savile’s extensive fundraising would stop.
But there are no excuses for putting anything above the welfare of a child – never. And it's even more disgusting that these cover-ups happened in hospitals, where children and their parents had every reason to expect they would be safe.
Many of Savile’s attacks were reported. The abuse victims who we are representing often went straight to staff to tell them what Savile had done. Disgracefully, some of the victims were simply laughed at. This must never happen again. Never again must a predator like Savile be given the keys, literally, to institutions where children and the vulnerable are cared for.
Mandatory Reporting of abuse would stop this. A compulsion in law to report claims and suspicions of abuse to the authorities. Slater and Gordon Lawyers are working very hard to get HM Government to toughen the laws around child abuse and to make mandatory reporting law.
What we also want to see in Thursday’s report is an apology. The NHS must acknowledge the failings that have in so many cases ruined people’s lives.
We offer a free consultation for victims of abuse and any communication will be dealt with in complete confidence. Please call freephone 0800 916 9046 or contact us online and we’ll be happy to help. Our UK contact centre is open 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
