Asbestos has been discovered in the ceiling above the main chamber in Chichester County Hall. As a result, West Sussex County Council is unable to hold full Council meetings. It has been suggested that the entire roof will have to be removed in order for the asbestos to be removed.
A governance committee meeting that was held last week discussed the removal of the roof, but was held in a different room of the County Hall. After the meeting, a spokeswoman for the County council said, “There are currently problems with the Council chamber due to a roof leak earlier in the year. The ceiling of the chamber has an asbestos coating which was damaged by the water leak, resulting in the chamber having to be taken out of use.
The decision has now been taken to remove the entire ceiling and eliminate the risks relating to asbestos. Arrangements will be made for a public gallery in room 140 of county hall and committee room 3 will be used to show the live webcast to ensure there is full disabled access.”
The discovery of the asbestos has already led to one meeting of the full council being moved – with April’s meeting held at Chichester College.
The Council should be commended for its prompt response to the detection of asbestos within a public building and ensuring that the wider community has been informed of same. Likewise, the Council promotes on its website the safe handling and removal of asbestos and other hazardous material.
