A recent document review carried out by the Metropolitan Police Service has alleged that Jimmy Savile sexually abused children from at least 20 children’s homes and schools across England during 1960s, 1970s & 1980s.
Education Secretary, Michael Gove said that the information contained in the review, which was carried out on behalf of the Department of Health, should be passed “to the appropriate organisations for further investigation”. He also stated that these organisations should “take all practicable steps to establish what happened and why” at the time of the incidents.
The abuse is thought to be widespread, concerning institutions in Yorkshire, Manchester, London, Surrey, Kent, Devon and possibly others. Henshaw School for the Blind in Harrogate is said to be amongst those featuring on the list, as well as Barnardo’s Children’s Home in Redbridge and four more children’s homes in Jimmy Savile’s home town of Leeds.
The new allegations have come to light just as the Government is investigating proposals to introduce Mandatory Reporting, a campaign which Slater and Gordon Lawyers strongly support. Many sexual and/or physical abuse victims believe that had such a law been in place at the time, which purports to hold institutions criminally liable for covering up knowledge of abuse, they might have been spared their ordeals.
Since the Jimmy Savile allegations were first uncovered back in October 2012, over 200 criminal offences by Savile at various institutions have been uncovered. Slater and Gordon's specialist team of Abuse Solicitors are currently representing 140 victims and are pursuing legal action against organisations such as the BBC and a collection of NHS hospitals.
If anyone has been the victim of sexual and/or physical abuse at the above named institutions or anywhere else, and would like expert legal advice, we would be more than happy to speak to them free of charge. Any communication will be dealt with in the strictest confidence.
