Victims of Mesothelioma will now receive more compensation after the UK Government amended a parliamentary bill.
Earlier this year an amendment to the Mesothelioma Bill was raised calling for compensation levels to be raised from 75% of average civil costs to 80%.
It has now been confirmed that compensation will be raised to 80%. This means victims of this fatal disease who are unable to trace their insurer or employer or both will be able to receive an extra £8K in compensation. This is reassuring news for sufferers of asbestos related issues including Mesothelioma but we do not believe this is going far enough.
Slater and Gordon Lawyer Patrick Walsh, who specialises in helping victims of asbestos related illnesses commented, 'This is a significant announcement by the government to increase the new Mesothelioma Compensation Scheme to 80%. It is a positive step in the right direction to compensate those who have been affected by this horrible diagnosis. Slater and Gordon supports those who have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma and while this increase is an improvement we will continue to fight for an increase in the scheme.'
Tracey Crouch MP who has been campaigning for these changes to be made said today "I simply cannot explain how happy I am that the UK Government has made this amendment. It is fantastic news for sufferers of this disease who will access the scheme when it comes into force."
Slater and Gordon Lawyers worked with MPs and policymakers, including Ms Crouch, to lobby Government for compensation for victims to be protected.
