As a law firm helping clients who have been exposed to asbestos we are always concerned to hear of the latest reports of asbestos especially in public buildings and work places. We see many people who have been adversely affected by exposure and are more than aware of the risks. Last week the first phase planned demolition works of the Greyfriars bus station in Northampton, this identified a significant amount of asbestos.
This was found in the insulation panelling, cement panelling, fire doors and ceiling of the station. Further to this the report from Mike Kitchen, principal regeneration officer, states that there would be “…air quality (dust) pollution…”.
Added to this will be approximately 450 lorry movements from the site and 96% of the site material will be reused or recycled. Concerns are raised as substantial amount of the reused or recycled material will be used in public spaces.
Slater and Gordon Asbestos Claims Solicitor Adam Wilson reiterates the concerns of the dangers of asbestos within public spaces and workplaces.
“The presence of asbestos in any work environment is a concern, but proper audits and management is essential and where necessary removal as soon as practicable to reduce any potential exposure is required.
The use of recycled material is commendable but this material must meet standards to ensure that no asbestos material is contained within. Further, measures need to be in place to ensure that the general public spaces are not also contaminated with the deadly asbestos material.
Anyone exposed to asbestos should register this potential exposure as soon as possible. Slater and Gordon maintain a National Asbestos Register and you should contact Dominic Smith on 0161 383 3527 to register free of charge.”
