It has been reported that Rolf Harris has been arrested for the second time following new allegations of sexual abuse.
He was previously interviewed by Operation Yewtree in November 2012 and was subsequently arrested in March 2013 and released pending bail until August. It has now been reported that Rolf Harris was re-arrested when he answered bail earlier this month as a result of further allegations of sexual abuse. Rolf Harris has not been named by Operation Yewtree.
Operation Yewtree operates under three strands. These include claims against Jimmy Savile, Claims involving Jimmy Savile and claims against ‘others’. Rolf Harris is alleged to fall under the bracket of ‘others’.
At Slater and Gordon we currently represent over 70 Jimmy Savile victims and are pursing claims against those named as “others” in Operation Yewtree.
This arrest once again highlights the importance of naming suspects in the media. Many victims of abuse, whether by a celebrity or not, have felt unable to speak out through fear of not being believed. Naming suspects in the media encourages victims to come forward and instils confidence that allegations of sexual abuse will be taken seriously.
