It has been reported that Rolf Harris has today been charged with nine counts of indecent assault and four of making indecent images of children. It is alleged that the offences of indecent assault relate to two girls aged 14 and 15 at the time of the assault and took place between 1980 and 1986.
Harris was allegedly first arrested in March 2013 under Operation Yewtree following allegations of sexual abuse. Following a lengthy investigation the CPS have concluded that there is sufficient evidence and that it is in the public interest for Harris to be charged. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 23 September 2013.
The BBC has reported that the indecent images of children are alleged to have been made by Harris last year. This highlights the importance of investigating both past and present offences particularly as there is often a pattern of behaviour. We are pleased that the victims were able to come forward and understand how difficult this can be. We are sure that the decision to charge Harris, resulting in the matter proceeding to a criminal trial, will be a relief to the alleged victims.
