On 19 April 2013 Spire Healthcare announced that it will carrying out its own independent review into how it responded to concerns regarding Mr Paterson at Spire Parkway and Spire Little Aston.
The review is going to be carried out by an independent review consultancy, Verita. Verita will be undertaking a patient listening exercise later this Summer and are asking private patients of Mr Paterson to contact them on 0207 494 5670 to discuss their experiences. More information can be found at the Verita website.
Interestingly the terms of reference to this review state that the Spire’s Management were informed of concerns regarding Mr Paterson’s surgical technique in December 2007, yet the Spire did not start their own investigations into Mr Paterson’s practices at their Hospitals until 2011. This was too little, too late for many of Mr Paterson’s private patients who underwent unnecessary surgeries between 2008 and 2011.
I welcome this review, as I am sure will Mr Paterson’s private patients as it will hopefully shed some light on why Mr Paterson was allowed to continue practising at the Spire’s Hospitals when there were such serious concerns about his NHS practices. The NHS independent review, headed by Sir Ian Kennedy is also underway and I believe that the private patients will now welcome the opportunity to share their experiences with Verita in the hopes that lessons can be learnt and that this situation will not arise again in the future. If you have been affected by this please feel free to contact me or one of the team on 0808 175 8105.
