Breast Surgeon Suspended by the GMC, Clinical Negligence Solicitor Comments

By Senior Associate, Clinical Negligence

The GMC have made the decision to suspend Mr Ian Paterson. The breast surgeon is being investigated for the controversial 'Cleavage Sparing Mastectomy' surgery he had developed and had been carrying out for years.

The suspension is not based on any finding of fact and is an interim measure while the investigation into Mr Paterson's conduct is on-going. An interim measure like this is usually put into place when:

- it may be necessary for the protection of members of the public, or
- it may be in the public interest or
- in the interests of the doctor.
