Medical Negligence specialist James Bell on DePuy Hip Claims

By Principal Lawyer, Clinical Negligence

The recent publicity surrounding all metal on metal (MoM) hips has led to a further wave of claimants contacting Russell Jones & Walker regarding DePuy ASR and DePuy Pinnacle hips.

We are well aware that there are areas in the country where recalls for blood tests/MRI scans and other necessary investigations simply have not been undertaken.

If patients are concerned as to whether they have a DePuy ASR and have not had a recall letter they should see their GP to ask for a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon who is aware of the problems of metallosis.

Some patients have reported no symptoms but have tested positive for very high levels of metal ions in their blood. Some of these patients have had revision surgery which has revealed damage to bone and tissue which was not apparent pre operatively.

I believe the full extent of this problem is yet to be fully appreciated. Once the legal claims are dealt with the question remains as to how the multi billion dollar orthopaedic prosthetic industry and it's captive regulator, the MHRA will prevent this type of scandal occurring again.
