James Bell: NHS whistleblowers active central unit

By Principal Lawyer, Clinical Negligence

I warmly welcome the recent Early Day motion, tabled in the House of Commons  on 5th July 2011 asking for a central unit to be set up to monitor and protect NHS whistleblowers.

The full text states:

"That this House welcomes the Private Eye, Shoot the Messenger articles, on how NHS whistleblowers can be silenced and sacked; anticipates effective action by the Health Select Committee and the NHS; and calls for an active central unit to which concerned clinicians can put areas and points that worry them, including details of inappropriate disciplinary action by health employers."

The EDM has no chance of becoming law but it is good to see political pressure being brought to bear after as details of the appalling care at Stafford NHS come into the public domain.
