I have recently settled a clinical negligence claim for a man badly injured due to negligent overanticoagulation.
My client was hospitalised with an infection. He was on warfarin (a blood thinner) for an unrelated heart condition at the time of his admission.
Blood thinners such as Warfarin and Heparin can work very well, as long as they are properly monitored and administered correctly. If they are not, it can lead to uncontrolled bleeding into various parts of the body.
My hospitlaised client was over anti coagulated with heparin and warfarin and he developed a severe bleed in the muscles of his back. This was not recognised for several days and even when it was recognised the heparin and warfarin doses were increased. The bleed caused permanent damage to the femoral nerve. Even worse the bleeding aggravated the patient's bowel leading to a perforation.
The Claimant had a stormy recovery but was left with severe and permanent injuries.
The case was vigorously defended but settled this week for a substantial six figure sum which will go some way towards helping my client put his life back together.
