Jonathan is a solicitor in the Cardiff Criminal Department.
His practice encompasses all aspects of criminal and regulatory law. Jonathan deals with a range of clients, including institutional, legally aided and private clients.
Jonathan has particular experience in Police Misconduct. Jonathan has acted in a wide range of cases, including cases involving a death following police contact; Jonathan has therefore been instructed before the Coroner’s Court.
In addition, he has extensive experience of criminal litigation before the Magistrates’ Court, the Crown Court, the Court of Appeal and the High Court (Admin). Jonathan has successfully appealed cases to the higher courts and to the Police Appeals Tribunal.
Jonathan also has experience in the Courts Martial arena, representing members of the armed forces, subject to investigation and prosecution.
Jonathan has experience of advising and representing clients subject to the disclosure regimes in a professional context, now regulated by the Disclosure & Barring Service. (Formerly the Criminal Records Bureau & the Independent Safeguarding Authority).
In conclusion, Jonathan represents and advises clients at police stations, either subject to arrest or attending voluntarily, in all criminal investigations.
Jonathan trained at Russell Jones & Walker, now Slater and Gordon Lawyers, and qualified in September 2004.
He is noted in the Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners. In Chambers & Partners 2014 Jon is ranked as an 'Associate to watch' for Police Law: Mainly Defendant "Jon Nutman heads the Cardiff office and is described as "a very nice man and highly regarded by the big names." He advises police officers accused of both criminal and disciplinary offences".
The Legal 500 2013 edition states that "Jon Nutman has a strong track record representing police officers in criminal proceedings. He is also experienced in general criminal defence work, courts martial and judicial reviews".
Jonathan graduated with a degree in Politics & Economics at UWE (Bristol). After teaching in further education, Jonathan converted to Law , completing his Legal Practice Post-Graduate Diploma at UWE (Bristol) in 2001, obtaining a distinction.
Jonathan is a member of the Law Society and the Cardiff & District branch.
