Odette McDonald Practice Group Leader, Group Litigation

Experience Profile

Odette is an Australian Qualified Lawyer at Slater and Gordon Lawyers, and is currently working on secondment as a Practice Group Leader in our group litigation team in London. She specialises in complex litigation, including class actions, group and multi-party proceedings, and other large scale litigation.

Odette is one of Australia's most experienced class action litigators. She has represented thousands of people across the globe - including institutional investors and individuals - in a number of high-profile and successful class actions, which have collectively delivered compensation in excess of $350 million. Her class action and multi-party claim experience includes shareholder and securities litigation, financial product and investment claims, trustee claims, claims relating to natural disasters and land contamination, and consumer claims.

Odette has extensive experience in obtaining compensation for victims of professional negligence, including individuals who lost money following the failure of investment products and others who have received inappropriate financial or legal advice. Her general commercial law and litigation experience is broad and extends to contract advice and disputes (particularly for small businesses, shareholders and franchises) and insolvency claims.

Odette is interested in innovations in the funding of civil litigation costs, which promote access to justice at a proportionate cost. She works closely with international and domestic litigation funders, works actively on the development of new models for funding litigation, and incorporates pro bono work into her practice. Her recent work includes acting for a refugee in the Australian High Court proceedings for unlawful imprisonment and negligence, and providing not-for-profit organisations with contractual and litigious advice.
